Welcome the new registration system for courses and exams!

The registration system for courses and exams in u:space has become outdated and has been completely revised. With the beginning of the winter semester 2020/21 the new registration system is now available. The new registration is much easier to use and responsive.

From grey to colourful

In general: the new registration system is colourful! The goal of the new features is to make the registration system more user-friendly. To achive this, we have reached out into the colour pot and added self-explanatory icons. Above all, we have worked together with students to make the registration system more user-friendly.

u:find – The gate to the registration

The registration for all courses and exams is done via the course directory u:find. You can either use the record of examinations in u:space to find the desired course dircetly in u:find or search for it yourself in u:find. Choose "Register/deregister for this course". You will automatically be redirected to u:space and can register there.

pi or npi?

No matter whether it is a course with continuous assessment (pi) or a course with non-continuous assessment (npi): the registration takes place via the new registration system in u:space.

In the case of courses and exams with limited places, each directorate of studies (SPL) determines how places are allocated for its field of study. The allocation is made either via the point allocation system, the preference system or the study achievement system

For some courses you therefore assign points or preferences in u:space during the registration process. You can change these points and preferences within the relevant registration deadlines in the new points and preference overview

After the end of the registration period, the allocation takes place. Registrations are arranged according to the curricular specifications (e.g. point allo cation, preference or study achievement system) and places area allocated.

You can check the status of your registration at any time in the registration overview.

Clear status values

In the course of the introduction of the new registration system, we have adjusted the status values of the course and examination registrations to make them more comprehensible for students.

For this purpose, two surveys went online in u:space in February 2020. In the first survey, students were able to add their own terms to the explanations of the status values. In a second survey, more than 1,000 participating students selected the terms they found most understandable from a list of predefined terms.

We have now adopted these terms in u:space for the registration process and the registration overview:

New status value  Old status value
Prerequisite currently not met      pre-registered prerequisite check
 Closed      Completed
Alternative place available  Registered (not confirmed)
Allocation by registration deadline  In consideration
No place received  Waiting list expired

There is no change in these status values:
Registered - Deregistered - On waiting list - In process

Together with the guidance system of colours and icons you can see the status of your registrations at a glance: from green + check = all good! to orange + call sign = Oh oh, there's something to do here!

Deadlines, deadlines, deadlines

Don't forget: there are deadlines for the registration for courses and exams! A registration is only possible within the registration period.

Active support

Many thanks to all students who supported us with valuable input during the user tests and surveys on the new registration system. Thus we were able to orientate ourselves in the design and implementation to the actual requirements of daily study routine.

If you are also interested in being informed about user tests in the future, please write to us at usability.slw@univie.ac.at.
